                                                            General Instructions

Instructions for feral cats:

Feral cats must come in a humane traps and traps must be completely covered with a towel or sheet.  If you are a first-time user of our services, you must read our Humane Trapping Instructions ( click here). Feral kittens should weigh 4 lbs or more. Traps can be rented at our office (by appointment only) for a refundable cash deposit of $60 per trap. There is a annual service fee of $20 per household.

Once you have an appointment and a trap, follow the Humane Trapping Guidelines, available by clicking here.  You should do your trapping attempt between 12 and 24 hours before your appointment time.  You should have caught your cats by 9 pm the evening before your appointment.  The cats need time to have their stomachs emptied by surgery time.

Feral cats must come in a cat trap and must be completely covered with a towel. There will be no exceptions. This rule is for the safety of clinic staff as well as the cat.  Some stray cats are somewhat friendly with the person who feeds them and that person may be able to put them in a carrier, HOWEVER we may not be able to handle that cat and the sedation process gets risky and time consuming. If you are a first time use of our program, you must read the Humane Trapping Instructions (see link in right top corner).

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CAPTURE THE CAT THE MORNING OF SURGERY AS IT MAY HAVE EATEN DURING THE NIGHT.  ALSO DO NOT TRAP THE CAT UNLESS YOU HAVE AN APPOINTMENT.  CLINICS DO NOT ACCEPT DROP-INS.

Don't intentionally allow more than one cat to be caught in a trap.  This makes it very difficult for clinic staff to handle the wild cats.  If you do catch more than one cat per trap, YOU WILL NEED AN EXTRA TRAP TO TRANSFER TO.

Remember to always keep the traps covered with a big towel/blanket to keep the cats calm.  Also keep them as cool as possible in hot weather.  Bring them into a small room in your home such as a bathroom.  If you cannot bring the trap indoors and it is hot outside, place it in a shady, well ventilated area (use a fan) and put frozen blue ice or a non-leaking bag of regular ice on top of the covered trap.  Replace as the ice melts. During colder seasons, keep cats in room temperature environment, especially after surgery. For small kittens, always keep in house temperature areas before and after surgery.

At drop off you will be asked to fill out a Medical Records form.  Drop-off varies at the clinics. Ask when you make the appointment.  Pick up is when the staff has called to let you know the cat is ready.  It could be as early as 1 pm.

Instructions for tame cat in carrier (these instructions apply only for those clients who have appointments for cats in carriers):

All tame cats need to be brought in plastic carriers, one cat per carrier for adult cats.  No cardboard carriers please.  Smaller kittens can come several to a carrier.  Practice putting the cat in a carrier a few days before the actual appointment day.  The majority of cancellations we have are due to people failing to get the cat contained.  Some stray cats have never been inside a home let alone in a small carrier and need some adjustment time.

Cats need to be confined in the carrier inside your home , without food (water is ok) by 9 pm the night before your appointment for the clinic.  The cats need to have empty stomachs at surgery time.

    SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR KITTENS:

If you are trapping kittens younger than 4 months of age or weighing less then 4 pounds, they need to be kept warm at all times because they will not have another cat to cuddle with nor are they able to move around to stay warm.

Kittens up to 3 months of age, about 3 pounds, need food in the trap during the night.  Provide food as late as possible up until 6AM the morning of surgery.  We recommend wet food mixed with a little water in a small plastic tray that microwave meals come in. DO NOT USE BREAKABLE DISHES.  The tray can be slid under the trap door without opening it more than about an inch.

Thank you for preventing unwanted litters of kittens!
